For several years, Mark Milburn and his team of volunteer divers have been collecting rubbish from underwater, around Falmouth. This year they are teaming up with Fathoms Free, Falmouth Bay Residents Association and Falmouth Town Council, to complete underwater, beach and street litter picks, around Falmouth and it’s beaches.
Over the years all sorts of rubbish has been removed from underwater, including old nets and rigid plastic safety fencing. The volume of rubbish gradually gets less and less each year, as most divers now pick up rubbish even when they are not involved in a specific event.
The hope is that this combined event, will help Falmouth have some of the cleanest beaches around, ready for the season ahead. So far there are over 200 volunteers offering to join the combined event.
The beach cleaning organisers, Fathoms Free, will be based on Gyllyngvase Beach from 10am. If you would like to join in, for either the beach litter picks or the underwater litter pick, contact Fathom’s Free via their Facebook Page – www.facebook.com/fathomsfree or their website – fathomsfree.org
