British diver Steven Slater reportedly got into difficulties while diving the wreck of the SS Andrea Doria which sank 60 miles from Nantucket, Massachusetts in 1956.
The 46-year-old, from Gateshead was pulled unconscious from the water by the crew of the dive charter boat and CPR was administered, but he was later pronounced dead. No cause of death has yet been confirmed.
A post on the EUROTEK Advanced Diving Conference page said: “Steve was a hugely respected and well-liked British wreck and technical diver”
The Andrea Doria has become known as the “Everest of Wreck Diving” after more than a dozen divers have died exploring the wreck, which lies at a depth of 73m.
Our condolences to all of Steven’s family and friends.
