Declaring it has “something for everyone,” organizers of the Vancouver Aquarium’s 19th annual “Divers’ Weekend” Jan. 27-28 is expected to attract thousands of people.
Dive demonstrations, workshops and exhibits are part of the attractions at the show. There will be more than 25 exhibitors. They include public service dive teams, dive stores, charter services, underwater photographers, manufacturers and conservation groups.
A historical diving demonstration will illustrate to visitors the equipment used by scuba diving pioneers. Vancouver Aquarium experts will conduct workshops, along with local divers. On Jan. 27 marine ecologist and research scientist Jessica Schultz of the Ocean Wise Coastal Ocean Research Institute will speak. Also on Jan. 27, Stewart Sy of SLS Photography will discuss how to visualize the perfect underwater shot before clicking the shutter.
The second day (Jan. 28) features Vancouver Aquarium’s curator of fishes Lee Newman, who is a technical diver and underwater photographer. He will offer his insights on photography. Other highlights of the day include dive instructor Liz Tribe discussing trim, buoyancy and propulsion.
The Aquarium’s diving and boating safety officer Jeremy Heywood offers techniques to keep gear working. He will teach basic maintenance and instruct on what to do when scuba gear fails. The hours of Divers’ Weekend activities are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days.
