We have a special guest this week on the popular Facebook Livestream DIVETALKS, powered by Divesoft. With a long career in military aviation, today Gareth Lock is both an in-person and online human factors in diving instructor with a wealth of knowledge to be shared. Be sure to tune in this Thursday, June 25th at 1 p.m. EDT, as we learn more about one of the most influential technical instructors in the diving world!
Gareth Lock spent 25 years working in the Royal Air Force, where he was both a senior supervisor and a tactical flight instructor on the C-130 Hercules aircraft. His education includes a MSc in Aerospace Systems and 5 years in the RAF as a Requirements Manager for complex Defensive Aids Systems. He now works in both diving and other high-risk industries like nuclear power, construction, healthcare and heavy engineering to improve human and organisational performance.
In 2016, Gareth formed The Human Diver, an effort which strives to take the human factors and crew resource management theory and practice he learned in the military and apply them to diving. Specifically, The Human Diver programmes bring non-technical skills and a Just Culture to the diving industry through both face-to-face and online sessions. He has trained more than 350 divers, instructors, senior agency staff and government officials face-to-face, and many hundreds more in online programmes. As a diver, Gareth is an Open Circuit Advanced Trimix Diver (GUE Tech 2) and Closed Circuit Diver on the JJ CCR (TDI Mod 1) with around 800 dives over 14 years, meaning he really knows his stuff when it comes to applying this knowledge to diving.
Gareth is also a successful writer, publishing Under Pressure: Diving Deeper with Human Factors. Additionally, he produced the documentary ‘If Only…’, which tells the story of a tragic diving accident through the lens of human factors and Just Culture. He has continued to share his passion and knowledge of diving by presenting at dive shows around the globe. And he has an extensive underwater photography profile whereby his zeal for cold, green-water wreck diving is brought to life.
There’s a lot to cover this week on DIVETALKS, airing Thursday, June 25th at 1 p.m. EDT.
