This week’s special guest on the popular Facebook Livestream DIVETALKS, orchestrated by Divesoft, is the well-known cave explorer, Brian Kakuk. Brian’s dive experience has taken him from the U.S. Navy to conservation efforts in the Bahamas and discovering new underwater species to becoming a stuntman. Be sure to tune in this Thursday, August 27th at 10 a.m. EST, and learn more about the exciting and adventurous life of Brian Kakuk.
Brian began his diving career over 40 years ago when he served as a U.S. Navy Diver. Since then, he’s dedicated a large portion of his life to the underwater environments of the Bahamas. As a cave diver, Kakuk’s research helped reveal new species of cave-adapted marine life and fossils which are now being used to repaint our idea of the Bahamas’ wildlife history. In 1999, Brian’s work in this area steered him to establish the Bahamas Cave Research Foundation, which conducts research and exploration expeditions in underwater cave systems throughout the Bahamas.
Apart from getting to work in one of the most picturesque places in the world, Brian is also involved in another fascinating occupation: film making! His expertise in diving safety has made him the perfect candidate for many films, where he has filled roles such as Diving Safety Officer and underwater stuntman. With more than 3,000 exploration cave dives to his name and accolades such as Advanced Cave and Technical Instructor Trainer and member of the International Advisory Board of the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD), Brian is the guy you need for underwater filming!
Brian’s effort is focused on protecting underwater caves such as the Crystal Caves of Abaco Island and the massive fracture caves of Andros Island. He works hand-in-hand with the Bahamian government and local NGOs to preserve what many consider the world’s most decorated and scientifically significant underwater cave systems.
There are so many topics to count on for this week’s DIVETALKS Livestream with Brian Kakuk. Whether you’re interested in his military history, his preservation efforts in the Bahamas, his fossil and new species discoveries, or what it takes to be an underwater stuntman, Brian’s got the answers.
