This annual event commemorates the sinking on November 10, 1975, of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of its 29 crew members. It is also a time for reflection on the memory of all the lives lost in the shipwrecks of the Great Lakes.
On social media sites, a virtual ceremony will be performed, and the beacon will be illuminated following the ceremony. The beacon illumination video stream will be provided by KBJR Duluth. The historic grounds of Split Rock Lighthouse will be closed. Visitors interested in directly observing the beacon would be expected to buy a permit for a state park. They will then be able to observe the beacon lighting in the State Park from the shoreline.
This program will be available live on Facebook and available as a recording on Facebook and YouTube.
