What We Do
Plastic Free July® is a key initiative of the Plastic Free Foundation that allows us to work towards our vision of a plastic-free world. From humble beginnings in 2011, the award-winning Plastic Free July campaign has grown through years of dedication. Our story is told in our 2021 Impact Report.
Foundation for a Plastic-Free Environment
Plastic Free July outgrew its home after six years, and in 2017 we established the Plastic Free Foundation Ltd as an independent, not-for-profit charity to better support participants and grow the campaign. The Plastic Free Foundation’s mission is guided and informed by our core values:
- Sincerity and integrity
- People, ideas, visions, and approaches must all be inclusive.
- a concentration on providing solutions
- Collaboration and authenticity
- The conviction that small changes add up to make a big difference

It was founded by Rebecca Prince-Ruiz (founder of the Plastic Free Foundation) and a small team in local government in Western Australia, and it has since grown to become one of the world’s most influential environmental campaigns. Every year, millions of people worldwide participate, with many pledging to reduce plastic pollution far beyond the month of July.
