A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday during a diving trip off the coast of Juno Beach, resulting in the death of a father. According to authorities from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place near Captain Mike’s reef, approximately 6 miles offshore, around 10 a.m. Authorities were alerted after receiving a report about a missing diver.
The diving excursion was organized by the Republic IV Dive Charter, operating out of the Jupiter Dive Center, which commenced at 9 a.m. Divers entered the water around 9:50 a.m. Shortly thereafter, a distress call came from a 14-year-old boy, who was part of the dive. He informed the captain and crew that his father, identified as Kenneth Lowery, was unresponsive at the bottom, having lost his regulator.
Lowery’s mother-in-law, speaking to WFLX, shared the harrowing details provided by her grandson. According to her account, the boy attempted to assist his father upon realizing the issue but was directed to the surface by his father. Upon surfacing, he noticed his father was no longer with him.
A search ensued, and Lowery’s body was found in the ocean around 11:30 a.m.
