Struggling for breath and trapped beneath the surface of the Cooper River in South Carolina, Will Georgitis faced a harrowing decision: to save his own life, he might have to sacrifice his arm.
Caught in the powerful jaws of an alligator, Georgitis attempted to free himself by using the screwdriver he typically employs to extract fossilized shark teeth from the riverbed. But his efforts were futile. The gator thrashed violently, dragging Georgitis deeper into the murky depths, covering a distance of fifty feet (approximately fifteen meters).
In a desperate moment, Georgitis realized the gravity of his predicament. “I knew my fate was sealed,” he recounted to The Post and Courier, acknowledging the imminent threat to his life.
