Tamayo Perry, (49) actor, lifeguard, instructor and surfer from the Pirates of Caribbean movie, passed away after being attacked by a shark while surfing on Oahu, Hawaii. During a news conference, Honolulu emergency services made the announcement on Sunday afternoon. Emilia, his wife (herself a great surfer) of 22 years, is left behind. They had no children.
In addition to playing a buccaneer in Pirates of the Caribbean, Perry has acted in Hollywood productions such as Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Blue Crush, the fourth Pirates movie On Stranger Tides, and Hawaii Five-O.
There have only been 8 confirmed shark attack fatalities in the Hawaiian Islands out of 116 recorded occurrences since 1828. This corresponds to 1.59 shark attacks and around 23 shark deaths annually in Hawaii. Tiger sharks are known to cruise the waters, however it is unclear what species of shark attacked Perry. Given their reputation for being vicious, it is true that tigers have attacked people more frequently than great whites.
Approximately 67% of shark attacks in Hawaii occur between 10 am and 4 pm, despite the fact that sharks are most active during dawn, dusk, and nighttime when they typically attack.
