In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Niko Kowell made a life-changing decision. After 14 years of dedicated service in LGBTQ community organizing and advocacy, Niko left his non-profit job and embarked on a new journey. With a decade of experience as a divemaster already under his belt, Niko began working towards his scuba instructor certification. Little did he know, this would be the first step towards creating a unique and inclusive space in the diving world.
The idea for Narwhal Divers took root in the fall of 2021 with the launch of the Queer and Trans Dive Club (QTDC). Driven by a personal desire to find more queer and trans dive buddies, Niko envisioned a diving community where LGBTQ individuals could feel safe, supported, respected, and seen. This vision became the foundation of Narwhal Divers, a company dedicated to combining Niko’s passion for scuba diving with his commitment to the trans and queer community.
This year marks the beginning of Narwhal Divers’ dive trips. The inaugural trip was to Puerto Vallarta, timed perfectly with the city’s Pride celebration. Next on the agenda is Cozumel in August, with a few spots still available. Looking ahead to next year, Niko plans to organize at least three trips, including one to the mesmerizing cenotes in Tulum. Every aspect of these trips—from the dive operators to the hotels and local areas—has been meticulously vetted by Niko to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
In addition to organizing dive trips, Niko offers a range of scuba classes, from introductory “Try Scuba” sessions to Open Water and various specialties. The “Try Scuba” classes are offered on a sliding scale, making them accessible to a wider audience. Niko also collaborates with local organizations to provide free or low-cost scuba diving opportunities for trans people and individuals living with disabilities.
Niko’s vision for the future of Narwhal Divers is both ambitious and inspiring. He envisions monthly dive trips around the world, led by a team of trans individuals. He aims to offer low-cost or free classes, trips, and gear, fostering a strong community of queer and trans divers. Niko also hopes to influence the dive industry to engage in more conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). Supporting queer and trans individuals in becoming divemasters and instructors is a major goal, as is sharing the joy and serenity that the underwater world offers.
Niko’s background in activism and advocacy has been instrumental in shaping his current path. A proud trans and queer person, Niko’s journey began in high school when he founded a Gay-Straight Alliance in Cincinnati, Ohio. He continued his advocacy work at Antioch College, earning a degree in Psychology, and then moved to San Francisco where he worked with organizations like Frameline, Folsom Street Events, and SF Pride. Eventually, Niko joined Trans, where he spent 14 years managing multiple trans and LGBTQ programs and grants, organizing events, and running support groups.
In 2021, Niko left his role as Associate Director of Health Equity to pursue his passion for diving full-time. With over 20 years of diving experience, including a PADI Divemaster certification and now an SSI Instructor certification, Niko has also been a volunteer diver at the Aquarium of the Bay since 2012. Today, he serves as the Dive Safety Officer there, adding yet another layer to his extensive diving experience.
Narwhal Divers is the culmination of Niko’s dream to merge his love for diving with his commitment to the trans and queer community. His goal is to make the diving world a safer and more inclusive place for everyone, especially trans individuals. Niko’s enthusiasm for diving is infectious, and he is always eager to share this passion with others, inviting them to explore and enjoy the wonders of the underwater world.
