In a heartbreaking announcement, Go Dive, a cornerstone of the UK diving industry for more than three decades, has confirmed that it will be closing its doors on October 6, 2024. The closure marks the end of an era for a business that has been an integral part of the diving world, having weathered numerous challenges but ultimately finding the current environment unsustainable.
Founded by Mark Hudson in the heart of Derby, Go Dive began as a small dive shop catering to local divers. Over the years, it evolved into a much larger operation, complete with an expansive showroom offering a wide array of diving equipment and services. Go Dive wasn’t just a business; it was a community hub for UK divers, offering not only equipment but also support and guidance for both seasoned divers and newcomers to the sport.
However, in the years following its 2018 transition to new ownership under James, Mark, and Alison, the dive industry faced a series of challenges that hit businesses like Go Dive particularly hard. The impact of Brexit, followed by the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, severely reduced both revenue and customer numbers, as many divers failed to return to the water post-lockdowns. The subsequent Ukraine war and resulting cost-of-living crisis compounded the situation, driving up energy costs and further straining disposable incomes.
Reflecting on the broader challenges facing the UK dive community, Go Dive highlighted how changing consumer behavior has also contributed to its difficulties. The rise of second-hand markets like Facebook Marketplace and eBay has made it increasingly tough for traditional dive shops to compete, especially as customers shift to purchasing used gear rather than investing in new equipment. While Go Dive continued to support the UK diving community—championing local dive shops and boat skippers—these efforts were ultimately not enough to sustain the business.
The announcement also paid tribute to the dedicated team of staff, instructors, and divemasters who have helped Go Dive thrive through both prosperous and tough times. “To Jon, Mark, Lee, and Flora: Your passion and hard work have been the backbone of this business. We are beyond sad that the journey is ending, but your contributions will never be forgotten,” the statement read.
Go Dive also extended a heartfelt thanks to its loyal customers, many of whom have supported the business since its inception. “Your belief and trust in us have been the driving force behind every step we’ve taken,” the owners said.
While the closure is a heavy blow to the UK diving scene, Go Dive is not shutting down immediately. Instead, the shop will remain open for the next month, with a closing down sale set to take place. This period will also allow Go Dive to fulfill existing equipment servicing and course bookings. In addition, the team will continue offering air fills during this transitional phase.
Go Dive’s legacy in the UK dive industry is immense, and the owners have encouraged past customers to share their favorite memories and experiences as they prepare to say goodbye.
Though the future may be uncertain, the bond between Go Dive and its community will remain strong, a testament to its 30-year history at the heart of UK diving.
