“What a engaging project and a crazy one. We have now retrieved 707 tires from what was a bad idea of a wave breaker that sank in The St. Lawrence River 35 years ago. Since September 21, 2024 we have been on location cutting the rubber straps around the tires in zero visibility. The process is a slow and demanding one.“
Thanks to the help of divers and seadoos helping us. Nathalie Lesselin
The tire story from 1990: due to wind, they needed to make a wave breaker in order to expand the marina in Ville de Beauharnois. They made the decision to mount tires in tandem (+/- 40 000). To make the tires float, polystyrene chunk wrap wrapped in saran wrap is placed into each tire and fastened to the others using two to three rubber bands (four to eight broad and half to 3/4 thick). As a result, most of the tires sank and it didn’t work.
Most of the tires are still underwater resting under the sediment layer. They are extracting those they can. Nath hopes to remove 1000 tires. The project comes to a close this Friday, October 4, 2024 and donations are appreciated.
