Tantoo Cardinal
Actress Rose Marie “Tantoo” Cardinal, CM, was born in Fort McMurray, Alberta, on July 20, 1950. Actor Tantoo Cardinal, Cree and Métis, has torn down barriers to Indigenous peoples being represented in cinema. In addition to the TV series Street Legal (1987–94), Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993–95), North of 60 (1993–97), Moccasin Flats (2003-06), and Mohawk Girls (2010–17), she has over 120 roles in films, television shows, and theatre to her credit. Her credits include the films Dances With Wolves (1990), Black Robe (1991), Smoke Signals (1998), and Through Black Spruce (2018). She is renowned for her powerful presence, her profound performances, and her environmental activism.
Inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, she has received numerous accolades, including the National Aboriginal Achievement Award (now known as the Indspire Award), the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, the Earle Grey Award for lifetime achievement in Canadian television, and a Gemini Award.
Cardinal is also an outspoken environmentalist. She advocated against the Alberta oil sands and the contaminating of water for resource extraction by drawing on her personal experience witnessing the changes to Fort McMurray. She was detained in 2011 while demonstrating against the Keystone XL project outside the White House alongside fellow activist and actor Margot Kidder.
