Anguilla has officially launched its Dive Tourism Policy, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting sustainable practices, enhancing marine conservation efforts, and bolstering the island’s dive tourism industry. The policy was unveiled at the MICUH & Tourism Conference Room, marking a significant step toward Anguilla’s goal of becoming a global leader in sustainable dive tourism.
In his address, Hon. Minister of Tourism, Mr. Haydn Hughes, highlighted the comprehensive approach of the new policy. “With this policy, Anguilla is now better positioned to strengthen regulations for dive operators, promote marine conservation best practices, and ensure that our dive tourism sector grows in harmony with our island goals,” he stated.
Key Features of the Dive Tourism Policy
The policy emphasizes:
- Sustainable Dive Practices: Ensuring eco-friendly and responsible diving activities.
- Community Involvement: Engaging local stakeholders in the growth and development of the dive sector.
- Partnerships & Strategic Collaborations: Building alliances with environmental organizations and dive operators.
A highlight of the launch event was the keynote address delivered by Ms. Aleeza Moseley, an Ocean Governance & Legal Professional from the SIDS Secretariat Blue Economy Diving Alliance (BEDA). Ms. Moseley shared insights on marine conservation and outlined how BEDA’s initiatives can support Anguilla’s burgeoning blue economy.
The Ministry of Tourism has expressed enthusiasm for the collaborative opportunities this policy presents. By working closely with dive operators, environmental groups, and the community, the Ministry aims to create a thriving dive tourism sector that benefits both the economy and the environment.
“This policy is a milestone for Anguilla,” said Minister Hughes. “We’re diving into a brighter, sustainable future that not only attracts dive enthusiasts from around the world but also preserves our precious marine ecosystem for generations to come.”
With its holistic approach and commitment to sustainability, Anguilla’s Dive Tourism Policy sets a precedent for islands worldwide seeking to balance economic growth with environmental stewardship.
