Following our report yesterday on the loss of Sea Story in the Egyptian Red Sea, 3 bodies have been recovered from the vessel, while the search continues for 13 still missing.
According to Amr Hanafi, the Red Sea Governor, the boat was struck by high waves and sank within five to seven minutes, trapping 16 passengers inside its cabins. A Red Sea Governorate statement confirmed that three bodies were recovered on Tuesday morning, and search efforts for the missing continue.
The vessel had embarked on its journey from Marsa Alam on Sunday, despite rough weather conditions. The Egyptian Red Sea Ports Authority reported waves as high as 3-4 meters (10-13 feet) and winds reaching 34 knots (40 mph), conditions severe enough to halt maritime traffic in the area.
Rescue operations led by the Egyptian military saved 28 survivors by Monday night. None required hospitalization, and they are currently being accommodated at a Marsa Alam hotel, where authorities and consular officials are providing assistance.
Major General Hanafi stated that the Sea Story had passed its most recent safety inspection in March 2024, with no technical issues identified. The 34-meter yacht, owned by an Egyptian national, had received a one-year safety certificate from the Maritime Safety Authority.
The Red Sea, renowned for its coral reefs and marine biodiversity, remains a key destination for diving enthusiasts and a cornerstone of Egypt’s tourism industry, which is vital to the national economy.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident as recovery efforts persist.
