A mystery surrounds the discovery of more than 100 dead dolphins on the Somali coast in the Bari region of Puntland, Somalia.
On Thursday, January 23, 2025, more than 100 dolphins—140, to be exact—washed ashore on the shores of Marero Hamlet in Puntland State, Somalia. Some of them have suffered injuries, while others have died. This incident shocked local fishermen, who wondered what might have happened.
There are worries about an impending environmental disaster. Locals are demanding immediate action to address the issue before it worsens.
Residents think something dangerous may have been released into the ocean which may have played a role in the catastrophe. Somalia’s waters have been a dumping ground for toxic waste from foreign countries for many years. Containers with hazardous chemicals have often been found along the country’s coastline.
Another reason according to the Somalian Ministry, could be natural factors, such as changes in ocean temperatures, strong currents, or harmful algal blooms, which can affect the dolphins’ health and navigation. Another theory is sonar is the problem; the pulses can deafen a whole pod of dolphins and or whales.
