One diver has died, and two others were rescued after exploring the submerged Twin Caves near Marianna, Florida, according to local reports.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office stated they were alerted around 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, when the group was reported overdue. A rescue operation was quickly launched, leading to the safe recovery of two divers. Tragically, the third diver was found deceased.
The three divers, all from Florida, were exploring the caves together, officials said. Their identities have not been released, and a medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death.
Twin Caves, located about 65 miles northwest of Tallahassee, is a well-known dive site at the bottom of Merritt’s Mill Pond. According to Caveatlas.com, the site features two entrances around 18.5 feet below the surface, leading to extensive underwater passages filled with clear, light blue water. The cave system extends hundreds of feet and drops to greater depths, Cave Adventures reports.
