Rescue operations were hampered by the MSC Baltic III container ship’s (33,767 DWT) isolated position and winter conditions, which included strong winds and ice in the bay, after it ran aground off Wild Cove, Newfoundland, on February 15.

Since the 203-meter (679-foot) freighter ran aground, the region has been hit by a winter storm. The Coast Guard said that weather hindered some activities on the ocean and that rescue crews were frequently unable to reach the ship during earlier attempts at salvage operations.
According to the Coast Guard, a number of containers that contained plastic nurdles, or polymeric beads, which are regarded as hazardous materials, have been taken off the ship. According to a prior statement from MSC Mediterranean Shipping, those containers were secured to lessen the risk of the contents being discharged.
The efforts are continuing, according to local news outlets, and fisherman are optimistic that progress will be made by the end of the month. Access to the places and the ongoing threat of pollution are issues as the local fishing season begins on April 1.
