In a bid to continue their crusade against ocean pollution, Ocean Liberandum gears up for its highly anticipated third annual underwater cleanup event, set to take place on May 25th. Following the resounding success of their previous endeavors, which saw them secure a Guinness World Record in 2022, and gather an impressive turnout of divers and volunteers in 2023, the organization is poised to make an even bigger splash this year.
Building on the momentum of their past achievements, Ocean Liberandum is rallying support from a diverse array of partners and stakeholders. With backing from esteemed entities such as the Association’s Environmental Patrons, including EDP and Critical Software, as well as the steadfast support of the Sesimbra City Council and international diving organizations such as SSI, SDI/TDI, and PADI, the stage is set for a monumental undertaking.
“This time, we aim to assemble the largest congregation of divers ever seen in an underwater cleanup,” announced a spokesperson for Ocean Liberandum. “Our goal is not only to surpass previous records but to underscore the urgency of safeguarding our oceans for future generations.”
The cleanup efforts will span a 24-hour period, with participants descending upon the coastal town of Sesimbra to tackle the scourge of marine debris head-on. Joining the fray are an array of diving centers, including Haliotis, Cipreia, Nautilus-Sub, MegaDive, Anthia Dive Center, Arrábida Experiences, Odisseia Azul, and Wind Team, whose collective dedication has been instrumental in orchestrating this mammoth undertaking.
In addition to the diving community, Ocean Liberandum has enlisted the support of local fire brigades, civil protection agents, and land-based volunteers, underscoring the collaborative spirit that underscores their mission. Prospective participants are encouraged to register at their nearest diving center, while those eager to contribute from terra firma can sign up online.
Reflecting on the significance of their collective efforts, a representative from the Oceano Azul Foundation remarked, “The health of our oceans is a barometer of our planet’s overall well-being. By banding together in initiatives such as these, we demonstrate our unwavering commitment to preserving this precious resource for generations to come.”
As the countdown to May 25th begins, Ocean Liberandum extends an open invitation to all who share their passion for ocean conservation. Whether beneath the waves or on solid ground, every contribution counts in the ongoing battle to protect our planet’s most vital ecosystems.
“We count on everyone’s support to protect the oceans,” affirmed the spokesperson. “Together, we can make a tangible difference and ensure a brighter, cleaner future for all.”
