In the North Atlantic, the whaling ship SS Charcot operated. In 1923, the steel ship was constructed at Tonsberg, Norway. She was sold to the Labrador-based Polar Whaling Company in 1943. After that, she was bought by the Conception Bay-based Hawkes Harbour Whaling Company.
She was one of the five whaling ships controlled by the Hawke Harbour Whaling Company’s Captain Johan Borgen. The ship broke her moorings in a storm in 1970 and was forced ashore, where she is currently berthed in Conception Harbour, Newfoundland.
Though the ship’s hull will eventually give way to the elements and vanish completely, for the time being it is one of the most accessible shipwrecks in Newfoundland for photography. Anyone can easily visit the S.S. Charcot as it is only 60 miles away from St. John’s.
The ship is visible from the CBS Highway, (Route 60) situated in Conception Harbour. Adjacent to the ship’s hull is a picnic space and a modest parking area.
