A tragic incident occurred over the weekend in Ticino’s Blenio Valley, where a cave diver lost his life. The Ticino cantonal police reported on Monday that the accident took place within the cave at the source of the Brenno River. Due to the challenging conditions, authorities anticipate it will take several days to retrieve the body.
Based on a preliminary investigation by the Ticino cantonal police, the diver entered the cave late Saturday morning but did not resurface. An alert was raised just before 2:30 p.m.
Specialized personnel from the Swiss Speleological Society in German-speaking Switzerland were transported to the scene by Rega helicopter to support the police. Around 7:30 p.m., the diver’s body was located at a depth exceeding 40 meters, approximately 200 meters from the cave entrance.
The recovery effort is complicated by the cave’s narrow passages, its structure, and limited visibility underwater, as reported by the cantonal police.
Efforts to retrieve the body began on Sunday, with police indicating that numerous dives by highly experienced divers will be necessary. As of now, the identity of the victim remains unconfirmed.
