According to Hawaii News Now, five scuba divers who had been drifting for hours off the coast of Hawaii Kai were eventually rescued after being spotted by a passing sailboat. The divers reported to her that they had become separated from a tour boat, with one diver appearing particularly distressed.
The owners of the sailboat contacted the Coast Guard, who initially reported they hadn’t received any other distress signals. They remained with the divers, monitoring the situation closely until a Coast Guard helicopter and a boat arrived around 45 minutes later.
In response to the incident, Kailua-based Aaron’s Dive Shop, the company operating the dive trip, expressed relief that all divers were safe and pledged to review and improve safety protocols, emphasizing the importance of maintaining consistent oversight and adherence to established safety procedures.
