The body of a 31-year-old Chinese tourist has been recovered near Mabul Island, a popular diving destination in Sabah, Malaysia.
The tourist, identified as Zhang Cao, a solo traveler from Henan province in China, was reported missing on Friday morning. “We received a report at 11:33 a.m. regarding a missing male Chinese tourist in the waters near Mabul Island,” said Superintendent Mohd Sabri Zainol, the Semporna district police chief, as quoted by The Star.
Following the report, the Semporna Marine Police, with assistance from divers, launched a search operation and located Zhang’s body at a depth of 17 meters. He was found fully clothed in a light-colored T-shirt, shorts, shoes, and a grey backpack, which contained a mobile phone and several passport-sized photographs.
The authorities have classified the case as a sudden death and are investigating further. Superintendent Sabri, in his statement to The Star, encouraged anyone with information or missing family members to come forward. “A post-mortem will be conducted within 48 hours if no next-of-kin comes forward to claim the body,” he stated.
