Early on February 15, 2025, the MSC Baltic III cargo ship lost power and ran aground in western Newfoundland, just west of Lark Harbour. Plans are underway to safely remove the 1,903 metric tonnes of hydrocarbons, including 1,710 metric tonnes of heavy fuel and marine gas oil, that are still on board the MSC Baltic III. As of now, no pollution has been found outside the ship.
The most recent information from the Canadian Coast Guard indicates that the MSC Baltic III is not safe to refloat in its current state. The ship is now stable after settling securely on the ocean floor.
The Coast Guard also stated that the removal of fuel and cargo will be the first priority for salvage operations due to the vessel’s current condition. As weather permits, the salvage crew is still evaluating the situation, and talks are in progress about the possibility of building a road to make it easier to reach the ship and lessen the delays brought on by choppy waters.
There is no safe way to refloat the cargo ship Baltic III that grounded in Cedar Cove, and there is a chance that it will have to be demolished there.

The ship’s hull has been damaged as a result of collisions with the rocky shoreline, according to assessments conducted by T & T Marine Salvage, the contractor the ship’s owners hired to assess the ship’s condition.
