So far this year, Emperor Maldives has reported a large number of sightings of whale sharks making their casual, gentle, relaxed way to the back of the boats as they moor for night-time. Not unusual but certainly gratifying for the guests aboard these spacious liveaboards. And the manta have been around in abundance for both divers and snorkellers.

Up to 10.3 million tonnes of sea life is unintentionally caught each year around the world, captured in nets, lines and other gear. Some of this is kept and sold, or released safely; but far too much is put back in the ocean, either dead or dying. In Canada, this includes endangered and threatened species like whales, turtles, sharks and fish.

That was more than five decades after the War of 1812 between the United States and British loyalists opposed joining Americans who had broken away from Britain to form their own country. The war was inconclusive with both sides declaring victory in what was mainly a series of skirmishes.
