Whales are indeed amazing animals, but there are plenty of other species in the ocean that make up a diverse and fascinating ecosystem. Here are just some of the unique species found in Canada’s oceans that you likely haven’t heard of.

Former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr sang about being “under the sea in an octopus’s garden.” As a qualified scuba diver and instructor, Sherri Ferguson is used to being under the sea. But invading the home of an octopus was not on her bucket list, despite the best efforts of a member of the species.

We got nine divers together from the Vancouver Diving Locker on Sept. 18 to clean up some of the junk that got collected over the summer months at Buntzen Lake. After meeting in the morning to sort out all gear rentals, mesh bags and lights we travelled to beautiful Buntzen Lake. Some divers meeting us there were already on the site with their gear ready to go and keen to get that lake cleaned up.
